Manali House (Watercolour)

Manali is a fantastic tourist location in Himachal Pradesh. I wish I could spend a whole year in such a house experiencing the changing seasons and enjoying the nature.

Progress report

It's been exactly 1 year since I ventured into watercolour painting. Yesterday I wanted to make a small painting as a gift to someone and picked up a photograph from my Panhala trip - where I started painting. After completing the painting, I suddenly remembered that I have preserved the coloured papers (can't call them paintings by any stretch of imagination) from my trip one year ago. That paper was painted on the spot. Normally I do not like to show my ugly work to anyone but sometimes it is useful to compare progress over a period of time. The first one was made May 08, second one in around July 08 and the last larger one was painted yesterday. I am happy to have made some progress!

Berliner Dome

I want to paint a fairly difficult structure to gain some confidence. Berliner Dome looked like a great choice and this is what I am currently working on. Here is a glimpse of some practice pieces. The final one will take some time since I require peaceful 6-7 hours to complete it properly and time is at a premium nowadays given my schedule. The base pencil drawing itself takes pretty long time.

Portraits and structures

Last few days I am working on painting structures and portraits. Haven't tried both these before in watercolours. Long time ago, I used to make portraits with pencils but doing them with paint is a very different experience. Here is one of the initial attempts. As of now focussing on the painting technique (wet on wet, wet on dry etc) rather than accuracy and likeness with the subject. Progress will be possible with practice only and practice is what gets documented here. So here it is. The first step. Hope to see improvement in next few months. Suggestions most welcome!

Lake Balaton, Hungary (Watercolour)

Zoltan Antal-Mokos, one of my best professors at ESMT, Berlin and a very good friend, published an article about himself last week. A photograph of Lake Balaton was included there. Normally I would have thought twice before painting it (after all lake is a lake and sunsets are sunsets, they all look similar, (but always beautiful)!). However here with the Zoltan connection, I had a strong urge to paint it. So here it is. Painted for Zoltan. I hope he will like this!
