Optical Illusion (Watercolor)

This painting is what I call optical illusion. The original photograph was so small that no details were visible. But I was compelled to give it a try because of the 'light' in the picture. The painting also does not have clearly defined details though I have painted the shadows very carefully. The impact of the painting from a distance is simply great but if you look closely it may not appear to be a pretty picture. But I love it nonetheless!!

Moving to Larger Paintings (Watercolor)

I have started painting on a larger paper now and it has its own challenges! With practice I should get a good handle on it.

Value-scape (watercolor)

This one is based on a photograph I took in Seville, Spain. At first I was overwhelmed by the details in the photo so I decided to make a small thumbnail value sketch. I then realized that it was really the reflection of sky in the wet road which made the photograph interesting. I then decided to do away with most details and painted this similar to the original value sketch. I liked the results!

Human Figure at the center (water colour)

Recently I have started working on figure drawing with the help of a great book by Andrew Loomis. I also then started looking at compositions where human figure is at the center. Here are few paintings based on some picasa photographs having human figures as center of attraction! I hope you will like these. The last one is my favourite!!

New paper, new paintings!! (Water colour)

I have moved from the rough surface to a much smoother cold pressed heavier paper - also moved from handmade Indian paper to Italian paper. It took some practice to get used to the new paper but I feel I am fine now. Here are some better paintings on the new paper. Let me know if you like them.

Watercolor sketches

Photographs as everyone knows enhance the contrast significantly making areas in shadow, very dark. So when one tries to paint from photograph on a large size paper, the painting does not have the same impact as the photograph. So I wanted to try something on a small size paper and ended up selecting a pocket size sketchbook. Here are 2/3 sketches I made yesterday and day before. I loved the effect, I hope you would like them as well.

More Water (watercolour)

Reading an excellent book by John Pike. While reading books cannot improve painting quality, at least it can help in avoiding common mistakes. Here is a painting which uses some learnings from the book. This is an exercise from Mr. Mulick's book.

Some portraits in Pencil

While I do not have enough time for water colors, I am utilizing the available time making portraits. Here are some recent ones.

Shine!

The water color work has slowed down significantly in last few months. But once in a while I am able to create something worth publishing here. I hope you like this one.

Alone!

Repaired an old painting few days back. This one is based on a painting by Milind Mulick - I loved the composition and hence tried myself!
